“General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars…” – Princess Leia Organa
Clone wars tells the story of … well, the clone wars. They are referenced a couple of times in the original Star Wars, they start in episode II with the Geonosis battle and end in episode III. This animated series is designed to fill the gap between the films and depict the battles that shaped the characters of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
There’s no real pretense at story telling either, it’s a frag fest on an enormous scale, flying from battle to battle with hardly a pause for breath. All the characters are deliberately modeled on the in film characters and the whole thing a very well done although the animation is no Disney piece of work, that’s for sure, having said that I think I prefer it that way.
If you love the new Star Wars films then this will fill a big gap in the story for you, but if you aren’t that interested or just love the new films for the special effects then stay away, you really won’t get much out of Clone Wars. On the other hand, if you have younger kids who are obsessed with perfecting their light saber moves (and noises) but you find the new films a little too much to feel comfortable about them watching them (they are a PG classification after all, not a U like the original films), then these cartoons are probably worth a look as a possible solution.
