Two men head out from Dartmouth in a small boat. There is barely any light in the calm sheltered river mouth as a huge storm rolls in. Well that’s what I was trying to achieve here and I think I made a fairly convincing effort. I didn’t convert to black and white straight away though, first of all I darkened selected areas and removed highlights from the land on either side. Then I converted to black and white and applied a high contrast filter created a while back to save on tweaking individual levels. Then I masked out the land on either side and boosted the highlights whilst dropping the mid and shadow tones in the sea and clouds. And finally I added lots of grain to make it look like it was taken in much worse lighting conditions than it was.
